Executives understand that their organisations can’t be successful on a global platform if they don’t have a DEI workforce. A DEI workforce is necessary to drive innovation, foster creativity, and guide organisational strategies. Multiple voices lead to new ideas, new services, and new products, and encourage out-of-the box thinking. Organisations no longer view DEI efforts as separate from their other business practices, and recognise that a DEI work-force can differentiate them from their competitors and can help capture new clients.
Why don’t the recipes for successfully innovating in one company transfer to another? How can one organisation manage to reinvent itself, but another can’t? What explains the attractiveness of working at certain corporations over others?
The difference is culture, and shaping organisational culture should be an area of attention for leaders and organisations. The agenda around diversity, equity and inclusion is one that remains key in most organisations, and it cannot be ignored. Initially, this agenda was driven by legislation in order to enforce the inclusion, equal and fair treatment of the underrepresented groups in organisations. It started out as balancing the race, and then later the gender scale, but has over time become less legislative, but more about organisations taking an active, action-oriented approach towards creating and championing cultures that embrace and recognise diversity, equity and inclusion. The focus has now shifted to become all encompassing, and addresses DEI issues related to race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, socio-economic status, gender, religion, language, age, etc.
For many years, there have been broad, cultural biases against women and stereotypes die slowly. People have long believed that many women elect not to aspire to the highest ranks of the organisation and take themselves out of the running. Lots of research has shown that unconscious bias places a significant role in hiring and promotion decisions, which also contributes to the lower number of women in key positions. But what about women who are currently in leadership positions?
